PRESS RELEASE

CORE & Listos California Prepare Vulnerable Communities Across the State for Natural Disasters

LOS ANGELES – July 2025 Nonprofit humanitarian organization CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) is pleased to announce a generous $750,000 grant from Listos, an initiative created by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, that focuses on education and preparation. The grant allows the continuation of a multi-year program to better prepare 850,000 people across the state for natural disasters.

In California, natural disasters are, unfortunately, a part of life. From raging wildfires to catastrophic floods and devastating earthquakes, each one has the potential to impact and disrupt thousands of lives. Listos aims to educate and prepare people to develop long-term resilience within their communities.

As part of this grant, CORE will provide online and in-person disaster preparedness education for people across twelve counties in California. The organization will focus on residents high on the social vulnerability index (SVI), who, without this intervention, would be unlikely to receive the appropriate education that can protect them when disaster strikes. CORE’s outreach strategy centers on creating region-specific plans, ensuring multilingual accessibility, fostering trusted partnerships, and providing interactive education.

CORE will further equip vulnerable populations with actionable disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation skills, utilizing a peer-to-peer education network to encourage households to adopt positive decision-making practices.

“We at CORE are thrilled that we are continuing this partnership with Listos California. Over the past four years, we have already reached 725,000 people, providing them with invaluable education and tools proven to save lives and alleviate climate anxiety. Because we know for disasters, it’s not if, it’s WHEN,” said Nina Knierim CORE’s California Programs Area Manager

Through this program, CORE will create safer communities across California. We want to ensure that people and communities do not just survive disasters; they thrive.
