Meet Victoria
A mother would do anything to provide stability and safety for her child. But what do you do when your country is at war?
After fleeing her home in the Kherson region of Ukraine, Victoria has spent the past two years with her three children, navigating financial instability while her husband serves in the military. She’s found work here and there but has struggled to secure a steady paycheck.
That all changed when she learned about a job-training program to become a trolley driver in Mykolaiv. With a CORE-funded scholarship that covered the training cost, Victoria began her journey towards financial stability.
Once she completes her training, Victoria will begin working for Mykolaiv’s transit system, providing a reliable income for her family and a renewed sense of security for the future.
“Three years after the start of the war, I finally found a permanent job, and I don’t have to worry about the future anymore. I have many plans, and I need to ensure that my younger children receive some kind of professional training. A stable income will help our family achieve this important goal.”
Our Work
CORE recognizes the vital role that mothers play—as well as the unique challenges they face—in community-led responses to natural and man-made disasters. Around the world, we support and empower mothers with tools to ensure their families are fed, healthy, and protected from violence.
This often includes providing cash or voucher assistance (CVA), which enables us to quickly and effectively reach families in crisis. Moms have used CVA to meet their families’ unique needs, whether it’s paying rent or buying groceries, prescriptions, school supplies, and other essential items. In the longer term, CORE’s CVA programs have given mothers the chance to seek jobs, restart businesses, and create financial plans for their families.
