On January 7, 2025, the Eaton Fire and the Palisades Fire tore through Los Angeles, from the foothills of Altadena to the coast. More than 16,000 structures were destroyed—including homes, schools, and businesses—leaving thousands of Angelenos without housing, jobs, or both. This is one of the worst disasters in California history, and it has changed our community forever.
Many immediately activated their personal and professional networks to bring relief to the communities they know and love. CORE’s emergency response team was right beside them, mobilizing on Day 1 to distribute essential items, provide flexible cash assistance, operate a child friendly space at the largest local shelter, offer resource navigation, and so much more. In April, we expanded to create a comprehensive 5-year recovery plan to address the long-term challenges of recovery. To date, we have proudly served more than 5,000 households.
But, for so many families, the road to recovery is only just beginning. One thing is clear—CORE is here for the long haul. We’ve responded to disasters around the world, and we understand what it takes for a community to truly heal and rebuild. Your donation today will sustain our ongoing recovery efforts and ensure Los Angeles families can recover and rebuild stronger and more resilient than before.
Meet Kathy.
“Every time you remember something, you grieve it. People will say it’s just things, but the reality is there are things, but there are things that remind you of experiences and memories and people, loved ones.”
When the Eaton Fire swept through Altadena, Kathy lost her home of 36 years. The tragic loss upended her sense of stability and community overnight, and six months later she’s still struggling to recover. Kathy connected with CORE early on, receiving assistance and encouragement in some of her most vulnerable moments. Now, with support from her CORE case manager, Hanna, Kathy is tackling the many challenges of rebuilding, one step at a time. From navigating paperwork to planning for a new home, CORE continues to walk alongside Kathy, and others like her, on the long road to getting back home. Read more.
CORE’s 5-Year Community Recovery Plan
Alongside the profound emotional impact of the disaster, thousands of people who lost their homes, businesses, or both still face many challenges, including securing safe and stable housing, financial instability, and rebuilding from scratch. That’s why we launched our 5-Year Community Recovery Plan, which lays out five strategic pillars to help families navigate this long journey ahead and safely return home.
