Why Moms?
Moms are the backbone of families and communities; by ensuring their safety, well-being, and economic empowerment, we are strengthening the resilience of the entire community.
Mothers often face numerous barriers to accessing essential resources and opportunities, particularly during times of conflict or crisis. By empowering mothers, we can create ripple effects that uplift entire communities, breaking the cycle of poverty and building a brighter future for generations to come.
Our Work
CORE recognizes the vital role that mothers play—as well as the unique challenges they face—in community-led responses to natural and man-made disasters. Through our humanitarian programs in Sudan, Haiti, and Ukraine, we support and empower mothers and their families with tools to address food insecurity, health crises, violence and exploitation, and livelihood opportunities.
Amplify Challenges of Mothers in Crisis-Affected Communities
Many mothers around the world face obstacles such as poverty, gender-based violence (GBV), and lack of access to healthcare, education, and other essential resources—all of which worsen in times of crisis. As caregivers, they often assume the responsibility of taking care of children, elders, and other family members with physical or health disabilities—and with that, often comes tremendous sacrifice and resilience. Therefore, it is critical that we prioritize promoting access to basic resources, healthcare and economic empowerment for moms within crisis-affected communities.
Provide Access to Essential Resources and Services
Every mother deserves access to quality healthcare and protection for herself and her family. In dire situations, mothers often prioritize the health and safety of their families, sometimes at the expense of their own basic needs. With our partners, CORE delivers food, water, and sanitation services, as well as lifesaving health services, medicines, and other vital resources after disasters to ensure that all mothers and those expecting can care for themselves and their loved ones. We also work to empower local women’s organizations, such as the Women’s Response Rooms in Sudan, because they often provide a lifeline to impacted women.
Support Economic Empowerment
Providing flexible financial resources and opportunities is critical to helping mothers meet basic needs and pursue livelihoods on their own terms. CORE’s Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) Program enables us to quickly reach families in crisis. Moms have used CVA to pay rent or buy groceries, clothes, prescriptions, school supplies, and other essential items to meet their families’ basic needs. Our CVA initiatives have also provided relief and stability, enabling mothers to seek jobs, restart businesses, and create financial plans for their families.

Meet Victoria.
After Russian forces occupied her hometown in February 2022, Victoria made a series of difficult, lifechanging decisions to provide for and keep her family safe. Victoria bravely navigated their new reality 600 miles from home, prioritizing the health of her 64-year-old mother, education for her 11-year-old son, and livelihood opportunities for herself.
