California Climate Resilience and Disaster Preparedness
Are you a local interested in volunteering to support CORE’s response to the Los Angeles Wildfires?
CORE works together with partner organizations, local governments, and residents of vulnerable neighborhoods to build resilience to the alarmingly increasing effects of climate change in California.
Why is climate resilience work needed in California?
Recent rapid shifts in temperature and precipitation seen worldwide are already having a severe impact on the most vulnerable communities in California. In recent years, the state has been hit by a rapidly increasing number of devastating wildfires, excessive rains, and severe flooding. As the effects of climate change continue to increase, significant steps are needed to mitigate devastating effects on those most at risk through preparedness and other proactive measures to help communities adapt.
What is CORE doing to support climate resilience in California?
CORE is dedicated to supporting resilience in at-risk communities. In partnership with Listos California and California Emergency Response Corps (CERC), we work with local communities to understand their specific needs and take proactive measures aimed at strengthening their resilience to disaster.
Powered by CERC Fellows, we organize and support events in at-risk communities focused on wildfire mitigation, urban greening, community gardening, sustainable food practices (reducing waste), disaster preparedness workshops, and more.
Wildfire Mitigation and Preparedness
2022-NOW
CORE responded to the massive wildfires that devastated communities in Siskiyou County in July and August 2022. The wildfires spread rapidly, claiming the lives of many and destroying many homes and other structures. CORE responded immediately to provide critical support and shelter.
Today, CORE has partnered with the Fire Safe Council of Siskiyou County to implement various interventions to improve fire safety. This includes helping homeowners create clearance around livable structures, increasing community awareness regarding fire mitigation and creating defensible spaces within communities.
Listos Disaster Preparedness
2022-NOW
Through Listos California, a project funded by the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES), CORE provides culturally relevant disaster response, mitigation, and preparedness training to communities in high-risk climate hazard areas in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Siskiyou, and Alameda counties.
Our team has hosted hundreds of events, emergency alert sign-ups, and distributed emergency go-bags and guides, engaging over 500,000 community members across the state. We mobilized 2,500 local volunteers to participate in flood and wildfire mitigation activities, including greening in urban neighborhoods and vegetative fuel reduction in the Angeles National Forest. Overall, the Listos program has equipped a diverse range of communities in CORE’s own backyard—including those with limited English proficiency, seniors, immigrants, and unhoused individuals, and households without access to a vehicle or broadband—with the knowledge and tools necessary to face natural disasters in this new climate reality.
