Unprecedented climate-fueled disasters, deepening social inequalities and escalating geo-political conflicts are increasing the frequency and severity of global emergencies. Nearly 300 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in 2024 alone. Despite ever-growing global need as well as an increase in targeted attacks on humanitarian workers, they continue to consistently step up to the challenge. Their determination, courage, and compassion are the reasons that CORE continues to reach communities with life-saving support.
This World Humanitarian Day, we recognize humanitarian workers worldwide who go above and beyond to meet the needs of vulnerable people.
According to the UN, 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers and 2024 is projected to be worse. In a violation of international laws, civilians and humanitarian workers have increasingly been the target of attacks in emergency contexts including in Sudan, Ukraine and Haiti, where CORE’s staff works tirelessly to reach community members. In many emergency situations, humanitarian workers are some of the first people that community members encounter; for longstanding programs, they are trusted resources, advocates, and even colleagues or friends. No matter the context, they meet people where they are with grace and empathy.
Whether it’s after losing their home or a loved one, seeking health resources at an outreach event, or looking for work to support their family, humanitarian workers listen and are committed to finding the appropriate ways to support those in need.
It takes tremendous physical and emotional strength to answer the call to serve vulnerable people in and beyond crisis in the current context. Join us today in recognizing the incredible work that humanitarians do and their invaluable role in empowering communities around the world.
“Naturally, I feel concerned about other people’s problems. The ideal for me would be to see a world without suffering where everyone is happy. Being in a position where I am able to help vulnerable people. For me, it’s doing what I am born to do.”
Garry Calixite,
Manager of Communications and Program Visibility, Haiti
Our 2024 WHD efforts will confront the normalization of attacks on civilians, including humanitarians, and impunity under International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Join our call to end these violations and help pressure parties to conflict and world leaders to take action to ensure the protection of civilians, including humanitarians, in conflict zones.
