THRIVE by CORE
CORE’s THRIVE Team is working with the West Valley Counseling Center to address mental health concerns among young adults and their parents/guardians within Los Angeles county.

Why is it necessary to address youth mental health concerns in Los Angeles County?

Recent data suggest that a significant number of young adults experience mental health conditions in Los Angeles County. However, their ability to cope with and navigate their mental health journey depends on a myriad of factors. LGBTQ+ and BIPOC youth have disproportionately less access to high quality and culturally competent mental health tools and services. These disparities have amplified the rise of mental health challenges and the stigmatization surrounding these experiences. Finding innovative, relevant ways to reach vulnerable young adults with the tools and services they need is imperative.

What is THRIVE?

In 2023, the California Department of Public Health launched the Children and Youth Behavioral Health (CYBHI) initiative aimed at addressing the diverse needs of children and their families at a community level. As part of this statewide initiative, CORE is partnering with the West Valley Counseling Center to develop and launch THRIVE, a Los Angeles-based program focused on mental health support created for youth, by youth.

THRIVE, which stands for Transformative Help for Reducing Inequalities and Valuing Emotions, aims to increase mental health literacy, reduce stigma, and overall encourage conversations surrounding mental health among young adults and their families.

THRIVE x Mind Your Mind

THRIVE’s approach is guided by 13 youth leaders ages 14-24 who make up the program’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB). With their insight, THRIVE engages young adults throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties through public outreach, educational sessions, and peer-to-peer workshops. Here, they’ll gain access to critical resources, mental health professionals, and learn healthy communication skills to share their knowledge with their friends and families.

The team recently introduced the Mind Your Mind, a campaign that gives our members a platform to talk about the mental health topics that mean the most to them, from balancing school and social life, to eating disorder awareness and assisted-animal therapy.
